Perspectives from Society and Industry
11th March, 2013
Center for Biotechnology, Bielefeld University
The goal of this symposium is to present varying perspectives on the topic of bio-patenting to foster a greater understanding for young scientists of this important aspect of the biotechnology industry, one which is generally not covered in the core of scientific study. This symposium will bring together experts from the private sector, policy makers, legal representatives, as well as members of the media to present their views on this topic and its importance. Questions such as “What is patentable in biotechnology?” and “What role do bio-patents play in the establishment of the bio-based economy?” will be addressed.
This discourse is intended to encourage awareness for young scientists and scientific professionals of the possible opportunities or disadvantages of bio-patenting in the life sciences. It is the goal of this symposium to stimulate a constructive discussion on responsible regulations to promote sustainable development of the bio-based-economy.
