Single Cell Genomics – applications to the human immune system
Single cell genomics is entirely changing the way how we are characterizing cellular responses in homeostasis and many common diseases. In fact, the cellular landscapes will be re-written for many complex organs and diseases. As in other sciences such as geography or astronomy, we will require a consensus framework for these cellular landscapes, which can be provided by cellular maps in large atlases. The probably largest international consortium in the life sciences, the Human Cell Atlas consortium, is exactly targeting at generating the most comprehensive maps describing the cellular landscapes throughout all human organs and tissues. Similar to other sciences, making such maps will become an iterative process integrating novel data derived by better and more sensitive technologies over time. Exemplified by the myeloid cell compartment in human blood, I will introduce our attempts to build data-informed and rule-based consensus maps as the basis to describe homeostatic and disease states in basically every organ within every species.
