Phytochrome Signal Transduction: Evidences for distinct pathways

Abstract:
Phytochrome (phy) A mediates mainly two distinct photobiological responses in plants: the very-low-fluence response (VLFR), which can be saturated by short pulses of of very low fluence very-low-fluence light, and the high-irradiance response (HIR), which requires prolonged irradiation with higher fluences of far-red light (FR). Several components of the HIR-signaling pathway have been identified, but only few that are involved in the VLFR. Evidence is emerging that independent signal transduction pathways are induced upon activation of phyA with very low fluence rates or continuos far-red light. However, the connection between the different intermediates as well as the difference between the signaling cascade of VLFR and HIR are not yet understood. We are taking a combined genetic- and biochemical-based  approach to understand the differences between both pathways.
