Bioengineering at the micro-scale: Design, characterization and validation of microbioreactors
Miniaturization of bioreactor technology down to the microlitre-scale is a promising tool for screening and scale up approaches of cultivation and biocatalytic processes. Microbioreactors (MBRs) have small working volumes (< 1 mL), are flexible, easy to handle in a numbering up system, and enable in situ monitoring of important process variables under well-controlled environmental conditions. Due to the low O2 solubility in aqueous cultivation media and the high O2 demand for aerobic bioprocesses, the O2 supply is the most critical transport process and may lead to mass transfer limitations. Therefore this presentation is focused on the development of suitable microbubble column-bioreactors for biotechnological screening applications. The characterization of mass transfer and hydrodynamics properties together with the real-time online monitoring of the most important process parameters through integrated optical chemical and electrochemical sensors provide comprehensive knowledge of the system and the bioprocess.
The talk will present the latest developments in the field of MBR technology at the ibvt and will discuss the possibilities offered by this valuable screening tool for biotechnological research and development.
